Part II · Square 1 of 15
Got a plan
Head / Wide Open. Ideas are flowing. Good energy, but it can scatter if you don't aim it.
Section 1
Square identification
From the Mission Map- Name: Got a plan
- Row: Head (Thoughts)
- Column: Wide Open
- Side: Faith-based
Purpose: Ideas are flowing. Good energy, but it can scatter if you don't aim it.
Section 2
Mission briefing
From the Mission MapYour mind is wide open. Ideas come fast and everything feels possible. This is faith-based thinking at full throttle: you trust a way exists. The risk is that a mind with no center starts ten missions and finishes none, or uses big plans to dodge what hurts right now.
The voice on this square
Anything is possible. I'll figure it out.
Section 3
Psychological foundation
From the Mission MapWide Open: Total freedom. Everything feels possible. Pure faith-based energy, with no brakes. Healthy in short bursts; without a center it scatters, overcommits, or becomes a way to escape what hurts.
Faith-based thinking looks for possibility, trusts there's a way through, and keeps your options open.
Core beliefs that often drive this square:
- "I'm not enough." Built by environments where worth was measured only by performance, rank, or results.
- "Without the mission, I don't matter." Comes from an identity built entirely around service, rank, and purpose that ended on a single day.
The science: Why beliefs run the whole map
Your brain is a prediction machine. Core beliefs are its deepest predictions, and they shape what you see, feel and do before you choose anything. Change the prediction and every square downstream changes too.
Section 4
Neuroscience
Cited researchPrefrontal cortex: your command post. The front of your brain plans, weighs options, and puts the brakes on impulses. Under heavy stress, stress chemicals flood it and it goes partly offline. That's why smart people make tunnel-vision calls when they're amped. It's biology, not weakness.
Approach drive: wide open. Your reward and approach systems are firing. Positive states widen attention and help you build new skills and bonds. But a reward system with no brakes can overreach, so ground it.

Section 5
Pattern recognition
From the Mission MapHow it tends to show up:
- Ten ideas before breakfast
- Starting more than you finish
- Talking about the plan more than working it
In your body
Buzzing, restless, hard to sit still.
Section 6
Military-to-civilian translation
From the Mission MapScenario · Head
Your VA claim comes back denied after eight months of waiting.
Which is closest to your first reaction?
Section 7
Operational awareness
From the Mission MapNo right answers. These are for noticing, not judging. Skip any that don't fit.
- What's the plan you keep coming back to? Write it out in full, even the parts that seem crazy.
- Which of your plans is about building something, and which is about escaping something?
- If you could only execute one plan this year, which one is it, and why that one?
Section 8
Rewiring exercises
From the Mission MapMove toward center
- Pick one idea and give it a first step with a date on it.
Pick one objective
- Write every idea down in 60 seconds.
- Circle the one that moves today forward.
- Park the rest. You're not losing them.
Commander's intent
- Finish this sentence: 'Today is a win if…'
- Keep it to one line.
- Read it back out loud.
Section 9
Connections
From the Mission MapSection 10
Integration
Cited researchWrite it as a When/Then plan: "When I notice ten ideas before breakfast, then I will pick one idea and give it a first step with a date on it."
"When X happens, I will do Y" plans hand the decision to your environment, so you don't need willpower in the moment. Across many studies they make follow-through far more likely than good intentions alone.
